MEDIA RELEASE: 9 April 2015
Continued drought results in cancellation of the Harry Redford Cattle Drive
It is with regret that we advise the 2015 Harry Redford Cattle Drive has been cancelled.
Mayor, Rob Chandler said, “Following extensive consultation with the Boss Driver, David Hay, and the Chair, Gary Peoples the committee has reached the difficult decision of cancelling this event due to the continued drought here in Western Queensland.”
As you may appreciate, this has been an extremely disappointing and difficult decision for the steering committee to make. The primary reason for the cancellation sits with the welfare of the stock and horses and available feed en route.
Gary Peoples, said, “We are sorry to disappoint all those people who were booked on the ride, but there is no one more disappointed than the volunteers. It was a very hard decision to make, all options were looked at, but the drought has had the better of us.”
“It is not just the stock route that was a problem but the enormous workload for those on the land and the stress it places on their business,” said Gary.
The continued drought is now hurting entire communities, not just graziers. There are currently more than 40 shires drought-declared, including the Longreach, Barcaldine, Murweh, Winton and Barcoo shires.
As the region’s flagship event, many local businesses were looking forward to the welcome economic boost that the event would bring to the community.
The Harry Redford Cattle Drive committee will arrange full refund of Ride packages to all currently booked participants for 2015. They sincerely regret any inconvenience and disappointment caused by this unavoidable cancellation. The organisers were hoping for late rain to get them through but Mother Nature has dealt them a very dry hand.
2015 ride participants will be offered priority placement on the 2016 ride and they will receive further information on this in due course. The priority at this time will be in processing refunds for the 2015 ride.
The Mayor, Rob Chandler said, “As a community, we remain ever hopeful that these terrible drought conditions will break soon and we thank you for your continued support.”
